Old Maid

Make pairs and pass cards — don't get left with the Old Maid.

GAME GUIDE

How to play Old Maid

Old Maid is a simple game of pairs and hidden draws. Matching pairs leave your hand automatically, but one extra card has no partner. Get rid of every card before you become the player left holding the Old Maid.

Start a game

  1. Start a bot game or invite friends to a table.
  2. Cards are dealt and matching pairs are removed automatically.
  3. On your turn, choose one face-down card from the indicated neighbour.
  4. If it makes a matching pair, that pair is discarded.
  5. Players with no cards leave the drawing order. The last player holding the Old Maid loses.

The unmatched card

The game adds a separate Old Maid card to the standard 52-card deck. It has no matching partner and cannot be discarded as a pair. It is not an ordinary rank that you can clear by finding another card.

Other cards disappear in matching-rank pairs. The game handles the deal and removal of pairs, so you can focus on choosing a card and watching the remaining hands.

Drawing and leaving the game

Choose one card from the face-down hand the interface indicates. You do not see its value before drawing. Any pair it forms is removed immediately.

An empty-handed player is safe and is skipped in later turns. Continue drawing from a neighbour who still has cards until only one player remains with the unmatched card. This game has a final loser rather than a winner decided by accumulated points.

Example: drawing a pair or the Old Maid

Suppose your hand includes a Queen. Drawing another Queen removes both, reducing your hand by one overall. Drawing the Old Maid creates no pair: it remains in your hand until another player draws it from you.

Once you pass the Old Maid on, you know which player received it. That information can help you follow its movement, although a future face-down choice still involves chance.

Memory and hidden information

The card you choose is hidden, but not every observation is random. Notice who has just received the Old Maid and whether a draw created a pair. A draw without a discarded pair tells you the player did not already hold that rank.

Human players may develop habits when offering cards; bots do not rely on those habits. Do not assume that a card’s position reveals its value, and avoid repeatedly offering the unmatched card in the same predictable place.

Strategy and useful habits

  • Follow the Old Maid after it passes through your hand.
  • Watch which draws create pairs and which do not.
  • Remember that an empty hand is safe; you do not need to take another turn.
  • Expect luck to play a large part in a face-down draw.

Common mistakes

  • Looking for an ordinary matching rank for the Old Maid.
  • Assuming a face-down card can be identified by its position.
  • Forgetting that players without cards are skipped.
