Makao

Match suit or rank and use special cards to outplay your opponents.

GAME GUIDE

How to play Makao

Makao is a Polish shedding game played with a standard 52-card deck. Match the discard’s suit or rank, manage penalties and empty your hand. Choose Quick or Classic before starting: the Jack works differently, and Classic adds attacking Kings and the Makao declaration.

Start a game

  1. Choose Quick or Classic and, for solo play, one to three bots and their difficulty.
  2. Each player receives five cards. An ordinary card starts the discard pile.
  3. Play one matching card or draw from the deck.
  4. Counter a drawing penalty if you can; otherwise take it.
  5. Empty your hand first, keeping an ordinary card for the finish.

Drawing and ending the game

Normally you play one card matching suit or rank. Drawing takes one card and passes the turn. When a drawing penalty is pending, respond with a permitted attacking card, clear it with a Jack in Quick mode, or draw the entire penalty.

When the deck runs out, the discards apart from the top card are shuffled into a new deck. You cannot finish with an action card: plan the last two cards so an ordinary card remains playable.

Classic variant

A Jack demands a rank instead of changing suit. Choose an allowed non-action rank from the displayed options. While the demand is active, players must supply that rank or another Jack. The Kings of hearts and spades add five-card penalties and can join a chain of Twos and Threes.

When you have two cards, use the Makao declaration button before reducing your hand to one. Forgetting the declaration adds five penalty cards. Quick mode does not use this declaration requirement.

Example: an accumulated penalty

In Quick mode, a four-card penalty is waiting and you hold a Jack and an ordinary Five. The Five does not answer the penalty. The Jack clears it and lets you choose a suit. The alternative is to draw the penalty.

Do not transfer that answer to Classic: a Classic Jack demands a rank and is not the Quick-mode penalty canceller. Always check the variant badge before choosing your response.

Bots and multiplayer tactics

Solo play lets you choose one, two or three bot opponents. Easy bots make weaker decisions; harder bots save attacks for opponents with short hands and plan a playable follow-up.

With several opponents, a penalty can travel around the table and grow. A Four only skips the next player, so watching seat order matters. Change suit toward cards you actually hold, and keep a wild card for a difficult turn.

Strategy and useful habits

  • Save an Ace or Quick-mode Jack as an escape from a bad suit.
  • Use attacks and skips when an opponent has very few cards.
  • Plan a legal ordinary final card before emptying the rest of your hand.
  • In Classic, declare Makao while the button is available at two cards.

Common mistakes

  • Using the Quick-mode Jack rule in Classic.
  • Keeping only an action card for the finish.
  • Changing suit to one you do not hold.
  • Drawing a penalty without checking whether you can counter it.
